Rasharkin's Got Talent!

Today we had the very first outdoor Rasharkin’s Got Talent event. A huge thanks to Mrs Wright and the P7 children who organised the competition. We had a large variety of acts which included - piano, singing, dancing, magic tricks, jokes, clapping, football and gymnastics. Everyone did really well and we had a very enjoyable morning.

Winners were:-

P1 - P3 - Cameron and Atley - telling jokes

P4/P5 - Amelia, Anna and Tilly - gymnastics

P6/P7 - Grace and Annie - piano

The overall winner was Harry P3. with a very light-footed and energetic dance.

IT'S GOODBYE FROM US!

We want to say goodbye to our P7 children. We will miss them all. We send our best wishes to them for the next chapter in their lives as they move to their new schools in September. We look forward to hearing how they are all getting on.

P6/7 Roe Valley Country Park

P6/7 had a very enjoyable trip to the Roe Valley Country Park near Limavady. They had a lovely walk through the forest and alongside the river. They had a treasure hunt where they looked for various plants and leaves and they tried to identify different leaves from a chart. They also learned how to make a timber hitch knot which they are now keen to use at home.

P4/5 Antrim Castle Gardens

P4/5 had a wonderful trip to Antrim Castle Gardens and Lough Shore Park. Mrs Henry had prepared a walking ‘Photo Treasure Hunt’ which allowed the children to explore the beautiful gardens and park land around Antrim Castle.

The children then did the Riverside Walk to Lough Shore Park where they had lunch, followed by fun in the park. They finished their outing by feeding the ducks and swans. They had a super time and were tired out by the end of the outing.

P1/2 PORTGLENONE FOREST

Our P1 and P2 children enjoyed a lovely trip to Portglenone Forest. Their guides for the day were Liz and Petra from the Forest Services. The children had great fun learning about the different trees and plants and they also looked at some of the insects in the forest.

LEAVERS' TEA PARTY

Well as you all know, we are soon coming to the end of term and for our P7’s, it will soon be their last day at Rasharkin Primary School. Today they had a lovely Leavers’ Tea Party in the sensory garden. Thanks to Jeorgia’s mum for sending in the beautiful cake for everyone to enjoy.

RESILIENT RHYTHMS

With funding received for joint Ballymoney Small School Principals’ Association, today we had a special visit from Louise from ‘Resilient Rhythms’. She did two sessions, one with P1/2 and the other with P6/7. The children enjoyed using rhythm, movement and singing as ways to promote good mental health. They learned how to use various techniques as coping strategies when feeling nervous or anxious.

Thanks to Louise for leading such fun interactive sessions. It was won-der-ful.

IT'S YOUR MOVE

A huge thank you to our Scripture Union team, Hazel, Laura, Robert and Lorna who have been coming into school over the past number of weeks, to deliver the ‘It’s Your Move’ programme to our P7 pupils. This Scripture Union resource aims to cover some of the issues of concern for a young person as he/she leaves Primary School and moves to Secondary School. Issues covered include, getting to school, doing homework and finding your way around. It's Your Move also covers some of the more difficult aspects of life at secondary school including making friends and bullying.

PORTGLENONE FOREST P3

P3 had their school trip to Portglenone forest on Wednesday 16th June. They had a super time learning about the different trees and plants. Their guide for the morning was Petra from the Forest Service and she was really impressed by the enthusiasm of all the P3 children.

After lunch time the children enjoyed free play and then Mrs Peden had lots of activities organised. These included:- building animal shelters, making timber hitch knots which they used to make leads for their log pets, owl eyes game, and owl ears game.

PRIZE DAY

Today we celebrated the efforts and achievements of all the children through a very different school year. Well done! We wish to thank the committed network of adults they are supported by, both in school and at home, for the many hours invested in these children’s learning journey.

Summer Reading Challenge

The Libraries NI Summer Reading Challenge will take place from 19th June until 18th September. Children can sign up at their local library, choose their reading goal then read books to collect special stickers and other rewards along the way – all for FREE. There is a digital platform too, so the fun can carry on at home! Children can read whatever they like in their chosen format – fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, graphic novels, audio books and eBooks. Everyone who completes their personal challenge will receive a certificate and medal. Events and activities will take place throughout the summer online and possible face-to-face depending on guidelines issued by the Northern Ireland Executive.

Why should children take part?

Children's reading can 'dip' during the long summer holidays if they do not have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure.

The Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge really helps by getting over 700,000 children regularly into libraries over the summer, with thousands more taking part online. There is no other free reading activity that involves so many children, introduces families to their library, encourages children to choose books freely and independently and is endorsed by parents and teachers.

What is the focus this year?

This year the Summer Reading Challenge 2021 is called Wild World Heroes and it is a celebration of nature and action for the environment, in partnership with WWF UK. Children age 4 to 11 can join the World Wide Heroes for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge to discover how they can make a difference to the environment. The challenge will feature amazing books, awesome rewards and plenty of ideas for taking care of the environment.

SPORTS DAY

Sports Day was a little different this year because we were not able to invite parents and friends to it. However, everyone had a brilliant time today, with lots of enthusiastic support from the other classes during the races. There was great competition and some very close finishes. The four main races were, running race, beanbag race, obstacle race and egg and spoon race. There was also a mini marathon for P4 and P5, and P6 and P7. The other class team activities were, football, netball, welly-wanging and golf.

Thanks to everyone for taking part, and also to Fullans who supported our Sports Day. We have included some photos of the various races and activities.

MILLIONAIRE READERS

Congratulations to Lucy, Susanna and Molly who have become Millionaire Readers in the Accelerated Reading Scheme. Each one of the girls has read more than one million words this year. Great achievement girls!
