On 28th March, four of our pupils, Dan, Mark, Harry and Isaac, attended a Table Tennis Tournament at Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre. This competition was run by John Fall, who is the Sports Development Manger with Causeway Coast and Glens Council. The boys had already enjoyed table tennis coaching in After Schools Club, earlier this year.
There were seven teams at the event, and each child played twelve games. We were delighted that Rasharkin Primary school came joint second. The four boys were presented with their medals at Easter Assembly.
Fair trade fortnight takes place every March to celebrate all things Fair trade. It focuses on encouraging people to switch to Fairtrade products so that farmers and workers overseas can protect the planet and safeguard the future of some of the UK’s favourite foods. P6/7 took assembly to tell the other pupils what fair trade was about and ways they could support it. They acted out a small skit to show how fair trade began and then reminded us from the Bible that God encourages us to be fair and share with others.
They also organised a Fair Trade break, selling Fair Trade bananas and Rice Krispie buns that they made themselves. The profits from the break sale will be sent to the Fairtrade Foundation which works directly with businesses and consumers to secure better deals for farmers and workers.
Our school councillors reported that the playground toy baskets needed refreshed. We were able to apply for a grant to fund this and they created shopping lists along with their classmates. The new toys arrived and were distributed and then the school councillors surveyed everyone to find out what they thought. Everyone was delighted with the new resources. With many thanks to the Children’s and Young People’s Strategic Partnership (CYPSY) for partnering with us in this and making it possible.
Many congratulations to Ruby, Tilly, Amelia and Mark who represented the school at the Causeway Coast and Glens Final. We were delighted to hear that all pupils did well and received a goodie bag, and especially so that Mark won the Primary Bake Off category. Well done!
We are delighted that Benji, Ballyoney Rugby Club is coming into school to teach P6/7 some tag rugby skills.
P6/7 have been looking at Fair Trade during their WAU topic. Some pupils opted to enter the local Causeway Coast and Glens, ‘Bake Off’ competition. We held a semi final in school to choose who would go on to represent the school. Well done to everyone for their efforts.
To help encourage everyone to choose to make an active journey to school, we celebrated Active Travel week with the help of Johnny McCrystal, Sustrans. Some children made a special effort to walk, cycle or scoot to school this week. Well done!
We also dressed in bright clothing on Wednesday to help remind us of the importance of being seen when out and about. It was delightful to see the pupils who made a special effort to ‘bling their bikes’ and all received a prize for their hard work. Three special prizes were also awarded.
Johnny also came to school on Wednesday morning to help teach pupils how to ride their bikes without stabilisers. We thank him for all his help.
Congratulations to our football team who made it to the finals of the Coleraine & District Small Schools League. Many thanks to Simon and Lewis (Coaching for Christ) who have worked hard with the team and encouraged them to reach this high standard of football and become team players.
P4/5 enjoyed the activities in their classroom today as part of our World Book Day celebrations. Everyone in school came dressed in their pyjamas to fit in with our theme of ‘Bedtime Stories’. The children in P4/5 read stories to the children in P3 in pairs. They also brought in books to exchange as part of a book swap scheme.
