This term P6/7 have been looking at fables. They acted out familiar fables then wrote their own based on different morals.

As part of their World Around Us topic, P6/7 are carrying out an experiment to see if plants need soil to grow. They planted seeds in different materials to see what happens. In order to ensure it was a fair test, everything else stayed the same. They will check their plants in a couple of weeks to see if their predictions have come true.
Today P1 and P2 explored the village of Rasharkin. They discovered some facts about the village and made a list of shops and services that are there.
P6/7 have used their knowledge of 3D shapes to build these with sticks. Lots of teamwork skills were in use as they cooperated to get the shapes to stand upright.
P1 and P2 have been considering what they would like to do when they are all grown up. A massive THANK YOU to all the parents who came to visit the class and also to those who offered to help at another time. It was so interesting to learn about your jobs.
After the cold, snowy weather P1 and P2 though that it would be a good idea to make bird feeders for the school grounds.
P1 and P2 have been looking at the story of the Little Red Hen. They made puppets which they used to dramatise the story. They loved performing to the rest of the class.
P1 and P2 have been looking at ‘Toys’ for their World Around Us topic. They brought in some very interesting toys that belonged to their parents.
P6/7 have been enjoying using a great new resource to help children get to grips with place value. The counters range in value from 0.01 to 10,000 and are a great way for children to practise their skills with numbers up to five digits as well as fractions & decimals, using both a physical and visual representation of number. Each value is also represented by a colour, making each numerical value easily recognisable. They also encourage collaborative learning in pairs or larger groups.
The theme for Anti-bullying week this year is “Make a noise about bullying”. P5/6/7 joined in a live lesson which used Adobe Express, (a graphic design app) to create a poster to identify types of bullying and how it makes someone feel. P6/7 then created an animated video to highlight ways we can “make a noise about bulllying” and help others.
They also enjoyed wearing odd socks to help remind them of the importance of looking out for bullying behaviours and how to get help, if needed.
As part of their Space topic, P6/7 used different oil pastel techniques to produce fantastic artwork. They also wrote detailed descriptions of imaginative planets using lots of language techniques such as similes, metaphors and personification.
P6/7 have been working hard to improve their speed of recall for multilpying table facts. These children all received certificates for great improvements, meeting the target they set for themselves for 100 facts. Hollie (2.05min) and Jacob (2.56min) were the ‘Tables Whizz’ for P6 & P7 with very fast times.
P6/7 made models of the sun, earth and moon to help explain how the earth spins on its axis and orbits the sun to give us day and night and seasons. They also used it to demonstate what happens when there is a solar and lunar eclipse.
P6/7 continued their work on space by researching and creating powerpoints about the planets. They used lots of ICT skills in this task from using animations to inserting hyperlinks.
P6/7 started their new topic of Space by looking at our solar system. They created a mnemonic to remember the order of the planets then used playdough to show their sizes. They discovered that using the same scale, the sun would be 1 metre wide and weigh the same as a Smart car!
P1 and P2 had a busy day today as they tried out lots of Forest School activities. They investigated trees, built dens and made Forest Buddies.
P6 investigated if all Smarties packets had the same number of sweets and colours. They drew bar graphs to show their results and also used the language of probability to describe the likelihood of picking different colours. They even got the chance to eat the Smarties which made doing maths even more enjoyable!
P6/7 finished off their Water topic by looking at the science behind divers and submarines. They made their own Cartesian divers and then were challenged to design their own submarine which would sink to the bottom and then rise to the top. Lots of great teamwork and problem-solving took place with some very successful submarines!
Today we made forest crowns and investigated the plants growing in our school grounds. We also had some time to play!
P6/7 took their learning outside during the first day back to school after Easter, making the most of the lovely, dry weather. In Maths, they made their own magic squares using objects they found around school and in Literacy, they played a retrieval race. This involved finding the answers to a Spring comprehension as quickly as possible but also being accurate at the same time. Beth and Harry were fastest finishers while Dan and Noah scored the most points.
