School Councillors

SCHOOL COUNCIL 2022 – 2023 The following children were elected to serve on School Council for the year 2021 – 2022: Evie, Mark, Holly, Dan, Dathan, Toby and Isla. They are now looking forward to working alongside the teachers, to try to implement some of our changes that pupils have suggested, to make our school a better place.

FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

We have been enjoying fruit and vegetables on Fridays, free of charge.  With many thanks to NACN for a grant that made this possible and the parents who help prepare the delicious snacks.

MARCONI'S MOYLE

P6/7 enjoyed and educational workshop on communication, celebrating Marconi’s work from over a hundred years.  Facilitators from W5 helped the children to explore the different ways of communicating, including string telephones, flag Semaphore and Morse code.  Marconi used his knowledge about the ‘spark gap’ to build a better spark machine for communication between Ballycastle and Rathlin Island. Many thanks to Causeway Coast and Glens for making this possible.

Healthy Food Choices

All schools are encouraged to advocate a consistent message about healthy eating, as per the Food in Schools Policy. This means all food and drink provided and consumed within the education setting should be nutritious and of good quality. School meals are a great choice, however if parents decide to provide a packed lunch, or morning break or snack, the following guidance may be useful for healthy eating tips and ideas.

The ‘Are you Packing a Healthy Lunch?’, ‘Healthy Breaks for Schools’ and ‘Healthy Choices’ resources are all available by clicking on each title.

The Public Health Agency, in partnership with Health & Social Care Trust dietetic teams, are running a series of nutrition webinars including sessions on healthy lunchbox and snack ideas, which parents may find useful. For further details and joining instructions please check the PHA social media channels. If the dates/times don’t suit or you would like to find out more about other nutrition topics, pre-recorded sessions are available to watch on the Public Health Dietitians - YouTube channel.

Orienteering Portglenone Forest

On Tuesday 28th June, P6/7 went orienteering to Portglenone Forest under the guidance of Mr Fred Corscadden who had taken the children for an after schools orienteering club during the year. Despite the heavy rain, the children had a great time and completed two courses with some fast times.

RASHARKIN'S GOT TALENT

Today we had a very entertaining morning in school watching our annual Rasharkin’s Got Talent competition. Thanks to Mrs Wright and the P7 children for organising this :- gathering music, doing powerpoints, posters, organising prizes and sorting out the running of the competition.

Everyone enjoyed listening to piano, violins, drums, jokes, songs and watching football demonstrations, gymnastics, dancing and magic tricks. It was a very varied programme, show casing the many talents of our children.

The shared winners of the trophy were Brooke with a beautiful ribbon dance, and Thomas drumming.

PRIZE DAY

On Wednesday 22nd June we had our Prize Day to celebrate the many succesess of our pupils throughout the year. This year we had two sessions, P1 - P3 and this was followed by P4 - P7. We were delighted to welcome parents and friends to these events. Our special guest speaker was Mr Jonny McCrystal from Sustrans. He encouraged us all to be more active when we are travelling locally. Congratulations to everyone who received certificates, achievements awards and special trophies.

Best wishes to the children in P7 who will be moving to their new schools in September. We look forward to hearing how they are getting on in the years ahead. We are also saying goodbye to Mrs Morrison who has been with us as Classroom Assistant and Lunchtime Supervisor for the past six years. We thank her for her faithful service to our school.

Sports Day, Team Games Winners

Well done to all the children who took part and enjoyed the team games on Sports Day. A massive thanks to Mrs. McIlmoyle who worked hard to carefully collate the points. Thanks to Mr. Wilson who judged the mascots for us. The winning team was the ‘Royal Racoons’, who also had the winning mascot. Second place were the ‘Regal Tigers’ and third place went to the ‘Jubilee Winners’..

P4/5 Trip to Greenmount

On Friday 17th June P4/5 went to CAFRE Greenmount campus as part of the ‘Bank of Ireland’s’ Open Farm Weekend. While there they had the opportunity to:

  • Make their own butter

  • Experience what it would be like to milk a cow

  • Visit and identify vegetables growing in the vegetable plot

  • Visit the milking parlour

  • Make their own flower arrangements to give to their dads, grandads, uncles etc in the floristry department

  • See lots of different types of farm machinery

After we left Greenmount we went to Antrim Castle Gardens where we had a picnic and then visited the new garden that was created for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee before walking along the river path to Antrim Loughshore where the children played in the park and fed the ducks.
